About Me

Research

My focus is on solving information problems in the domain of medicine and health. I am a PhD student in Biomedical and Health Informatics at the University of Washington and have a BS in Informatics from the Information School at the University of Washington. I want to bringing knowledge from information science and human-computer interaction to the design of technology in medical informatics to create new and better solutions. I want to focus on understanding information behavior and information needs in a larger context of people’s goals and situations. This will enable us to solve important information problems with innovative systems that people find useful instead of frustrating and that help them achieve their goals. Currently, I'm focusing on applying user-centered design techniques in the creation of a system to support the personal information management needs of breast cancer patients.

At the University of Washington my advisor is Dr. Wanda Pratt and I am part of the iMed research group. One project I’ve worked on is LitLinker, which is a text-mining interface to help scientists discover hidden connections between concepts in the biomedical literature. My main contribution to LitLinker has been work designing an interface to display the results of the text-mining process. I am now in Biomedical and Health Informatics within the School of Medicine at the University of Washington. I am also part of the DUB center at UW, which is an alliance of people exploring issues in HCI.
